Woman killed after being hit by car in Co Clare was mum-of-two who recently began a new job as a carer

The tragic woman who was killed after being hit by a car yesterday was a mum-of-two who had recently started a new job as a carer.

A forensic examination of the scene where the woman was struck by a car and later died in hospital, took place in Co Clare on Friday morning.

The 41-year-old mother-of-two, was pronounced dead in hospital on Thursday night.

She was struck by a car as she crossed the main N68 Ennis to Kilrush road near Darragh at around 7.00pm.

According to locals, the woman, who had been living in Ennis, worked as a carer to a local man and had only started the job very recently.

It’s also understood she had been crossing the road to where a vehicle was parked waiting for her when a car travelling west towards Kilrush collided with her.

A shoe lay in the road this morning where neighbours had run to help the gravely-injured woman. A shoe could also be seen lying in the middle of the road.

A number of ambulances and Garda patrols from Ennis responded to the incident.

The woman was treated at the scene before being rushed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. She was pronounced dead shortly after 8.00pm. The driver of the car, a man in his 40s, escaped injury.

Three units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station were also attended the scene.

Fire crews set up lighting towers to illuminate the scene for local Garda crime scene investigators as they carried out a preliminary examination of the site.

A one-kilometre stretch of the N68 was closed and traffic diverted away from the area as Gardaí preserved the scene overnight.

A number of vehicles that came up on the scene immediately after the incident, remained at the overnight even though they weren’t directly involved in the incident.

Gardaí at Ennis have appealed for witnesses to come forward if they passed the location around 7.00pm and saw anything that might assist them with their investigation.

A Garda spokesman said: "A 41-year-old female pedestrian was seriously injured when she was struck by a car.

"The woman was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car, a man in his 40s, was unharmed. The local Coroner will be notified.”

"Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Ennis Garda Station 065-6848100 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111,” the spokesman added.

Thursday night's collision occurred on the same road and just four kilometres from where an 84-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle collision late last month.

In 2009, two men died in a head-on collision on the N68 at Bansha, Darragh just about two kilometres on the Kilrush side of where last nights incident happened.
