Woman killed after being hit by a heavy vehicle in Cork City

A woman has died after being struck by a lorry as she crossed the road in Cork City.

The incident occurred after 4.50pm this afternoon as the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was crossing the road by Tinker's Cross - close by the Mayfield Business Park.

Emergency services including units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene on the Old Youghal Road.

A section of road has been closed while the emergency services deal with the incident, Cork Beo reports.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area. A section of the road has been closed off for forensic collision investigation.

Conditions on Cork Roads have been particularly bad today, with multiple accidents in driving rain and poor visibility.

There was a separate, second accident involving a pedestrian on the main road to Bandon just before the bridge going into the town.

And there was a serious crash at the entrance to the Jack Lynch Tunnel, eastbound, shortly before 4pm which caused serious traffic disruption at rush hour.
