Woman jailed after almost £1,500 of Class A drugs found at her flat

A woman with a cocaine "addiction she could not afford" had crack cocaine and heroin worth almost £1,500 at her "drugs den" home, a court has heard.

Michelle Wetherall was found in possession of the Class A drugs, as well as cannabis and more than £600 in cash, when officers from South Wales Police carried out a drugs warrant at her flat.

Tom Scapens, prosecuting at Swansea Crown Court , said Wetherall and two men were at her Neath home when police arrived to execute a drugs warrant on March 16 last year.

Officers found 9.15g of crack cocaine with a street value of £920, 26 wraps of heroin with a street value of £520, "a small amount" of cannabis, and £620 in cash among other drug paraphernalia.

The court heard that Wetherall had 19 previous convictions, including two for drug-related offences, with her most recent conviction in December for causing actual bodily harm and possessing a bladed article resulting in a 13-month prison sentence that she is currently serving.

Robert Chudleigh, defending, explained that Wetherall had been "abusing" crack cocaine and had "an addiction she could not afford" as she would spend £500 a month on the drug.

He said that his client "acknowledged there was a drug problem" and that the situation had "all got too much".

Wetherall, of Croft Road, Neath, pleaded guilty to possessing both crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply and to possessing cannabis.

On Thursday she appeared in court via video link from HMP Eastwood Park for sentencing.

Judge Geraint Walters told Wetherall that she needs to decide whether or not she wants to spend the rest of her life in prison.

He said: "Police found what could only be described as a drugs den. They destroy lives and they also affect the communities where drug deals take place. Activity of this sort brings about other crime."

Wetherall was sentenced to three years in prison for the possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply and one month in prison for the possession of cannabis which will run concurrently.
