Woman is branded 'cruel and abusive' for dying dog pink to match 'sassy personality'

Lydia Geall's pet pooch, Eggz, certainly has a unique look, with the proud dog owner often getting comments about Eggz's "rock-star" or " Cruella De Vil " appearance.

When Lydia, 28, from Hull, gave Eggz a make-over, however, she found herself the focus of harsh criticism.

Lydia, who happens to be the owner of Oakwood Dog Grooming, gave her dog bright-pink feet and a matching tail with magenta hair dye.

Moments after posting an image of her handiwork online, the heated backlash started, with Lydia being labelled as "cruel and selfish".

Lydia said: "A lot of people have said I dyed her for attention, but even without her coloured bits she was already a pretty unusual looking dog.

"I've never been able to take her anywhere without people stopping to laugh about looking like Cruella De Vil or an 80s glam rocker."

The criticism also included accusations that using dye on dogs is in fact dangerous for them, with one person fuming: "It is medically proven that there are no 100 per cent safe dyes for animals.

"Chemicals found in hair colour such as hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, are very strong chemicals that can cause allergic reactions in dogs. Hair colouring is a human fad and pets such as cats and dogs should be kept outside this ambit

Being a dog-groomer, though, Lydia insists that this is not the case with the dye she carefully selected, which was "semi-permanent, vegan and dog-friendly"

Addressing the accusations of abuse, a salon spokesperson said: "How on earth is it abuse? Eggz couldn't care less what colour she is, and the dye contains less nasties than most leading pet brands.

"Abuse is not brushing your dog so it gets so knotty it's painful, not walking your dog so it gets so fat it dies young from the strain on its body. Abuse is not feeding your dog or giving it water or love.

"How in any way is rubbing a bit of dye on a dogs fur abuse? And to stop your direct debit that helps rehome and save the lives of dogs, just because you don't like a dogs hair cut, is shameful!

"But Oakwood rescue and Oakwood grooming are actually separate businesses so this has nothing to do with the rescue anyway."

The wave of negativity prompted Lydia to speak out, saying that the new style suits Eggz's 'sassy' personality - as well as clarifying that she is the owner of the dog.
