Woman injured by partner as he struck her in van driving at 10mph

A woman says she feels "like a prisoner in my own home" after her former partner recklessly struck her with his car, a court heard.

Her victim impact statement was read out at Nottingham Crown Court after Paul Jackson had admitted driving without due care and attention, assault, causing bodily harm, and damaging her iPhone.

She said she had been left constantly "locking my doors and checking them" following the incident.

It began with Jackson calling her and asking her if "she loved him" and she told him "she had" in the early hours of September 21, 2019.

But then Jackson turned up at her address and she opened the door and he was asking why they could not sort the relationship out.

She told him to leave and he eventually went back outside and she texted her brother to arrange to stay there for the night.

Jackson grabbed the phone from her hand and threw it three times - once across Calrton Road, Carlton.

As she went to pick it up, Jackson got into his van, reversed it out of the driveway and drove when she was in the road, striking her and causing her to fall to the floor.

Jackson kept on driving and did not stop, leaving her with a large bruise and bump to her scalp, scratches to her left elbow and sore all over her body.

Jackson, 50, of Watson Street, Worksop, put forward a basis of plea; that he attended her address and there had been a number of calls between them that day.

He accepted he damaged her phone. He came to leave and reversed the van out of the driveway onto the road. As he was driving forward, no more than 10mph, she was in the road and she was injured.

He did not deliberately drive or aim at her and accepted his actions were reckless.

Steven Gosnell, mitigating, said the incident happened 20 months ago and there had been no further offending and "he has moved on with his life". Jackson is in a new relationship and they are expecting a son in November. His client pleaded guilty. His last conviction was more than 28 years ago.

He said Jackson drove his vehicle slowly but too close to the victim and she stayed where she was.

Recorder Richard Davis gave him a community order for 12 months for the assault, causing bodily harm, and ordered he attend the "building better relationships" programme and complete ten rehabilitation activity days.

He also imposed a curfew on Jackson between 9pm and 7am. Seven penalty points will go on his licence for the driving offence. A restraining order was made to stay away from the victim for 12 months. He must pay £900 compensation for the criminal damage, costs of £425 and a victim surcharge.

The Recorder said: "You left in your vehicle which you drove, I accept, recklessly and in so doing, you struck her. This was non-intentional but as a result of your recklessness, causing her bruising and other injuries".
