Woman injured after jumping from burning factory in Melbourne

Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

A woman has been seriously injured after jumping out of a disused factory as it went up in flames in St Kilda, in Melbourne's bayside suburbs.

Emergency services were called to the burning former meatworks building on Greeves Street about 7:45am.

The woman, aged in her 20s, suffered head, arm and leg injuries and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

It took fire fighters just over one hour to bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution.

A community warning was issued for smoke and traffic delays in the St Kilda, St Kilda East, St Kilda West, Balaclava, Elwood, Windsor and Elsternwick areas.

Authorities urged motorists to keep the roads clear in the area.
