Woman injured after car being pursued by police hits her

West Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following a serious car crash last night.

The incident occurred on the A650 Drighlington bypass near Birstall at 6.41pm.

A 48-year-old woman in a Vauxhall Corsa was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries following a collision with a stolen Mercedes which police were pursuing.

Last night eyewitnesses said the road was blocked both ways with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in attendance.

In a statement this morning West Yorkshire Police said: "The Mercedes, which had been reported as stolen, was being pursued by police prior to the collision and as a result a referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
