Woman in 'terrible pain' blown away by policeman in Tesco queue

A woman has thanked a local policeman after his 'lovely gesture' helped relieve her from 'terrible pain'.

Marie Hill, 36, from Wallasey in Wirral had been suffering from severe toothache for almost a week and despite being prescribed antibiotics by her GP, said she was struggling to manage the pain.

After running out of Anadin, which she said has been the "only thing which has worked for her" - Marie rushed to her local Tesco at around 9pm on Tuesday (November 23) evening.

Marie told the ECHO: "I've been on a course of antibiotics for five days which hasn't done anything for me.

"The toothache has been terrible and I can feel it in the whole of my face.

"Anadin has been the only thing I've found which has helped - so when I realised I had ran out that's why I had to get to Tesco straight away."

After picking up the painkillers, Marie went to pay but after scanning the item through the self service till at Tesco Express on Poulton Road she realised she didn't have her debit card or any cash with her.

Marie, who lives on Norwood Road, attempted to activate her Samsung Pay via her watch but said she is "useless with technology" so was having little luck and admitted she felt "very confused".

Marie said: “As I was at the self-serve till, I realised I picked up my son’s card, not my own, so I tried to get my Samsung Pay up on my watch but couldn't find it - I’m rubbish at technology.”

Marie said that behind her in the queue were two policemen who she turned to and asked for help in accessing the pay method on her watch.

Marie added: “I jokingly said to one of them ‘since you're obviously trustworthy, can you help me access my Samsung Pay?'.

"One of them said 'I've not got a clue, I'm on Apple', then the other one tried to explain to me that I needed my phone for it to connect and also offered to pay - but I thought I didn't need it and tried it anyway and it clearly didn't work."

After failing to pay for the painkillers through her phone and not wanting to use her son’s card, Marie said one of the policemen offered a second time to pay the £2.40 on her behalf.

She explained to the policeman that she only lives five minutes away and insisted that it was fine and she would go home to pick up her card, however the man insisted.

Marie said: “The policeman said ‘honestly it's fine, I'll just get it for you' and reached over me to rescan my item and paid for it on his card.

“I said ‘thankyou so much you really didn't have to, that's so nice’ and he just laughed and said ‘it's ok, I don't mind’.

"It was just such a lovely thing to do."

Writing about the event on Facebook, Marie thanked the ‘lovely policeman’ and explained how he had jumped in to pay for her pain relief.

The post has received positive reactions from over 375 people across the borough with many people in the comments stating his gesture was ‘lovely’.

Marie added: "It was so kind and so lovely what he done.

"The police can get a really bad rep and that's exactly why I posted about it on the Facebook page - to show they are actually there to help the community."

After leaving the store, Marie said both the police and herself returned to their cars and even smiled and waved at each other as they were driving away.
