Woman in NT quarantine facility tests positive for UK coronavirus strain

The woman who tested positive for the UK strain flew into Darwin from London on December 30.

The UK strain of coronavirus has been detected in Darwin's Howard Springs quarantine facility, with a 26-year-old woman who arrived in Australia from London testing positive for the more contagious strain of the virus.

It is the first time the virulent UK strain has been detected in the Northern Territory.

The woman arrived on a repatriation flight from London on December 30 and tested positive for coronavirus on December 31, but NT health authorities on Saturday confirmed the woman had tested positive for the UK strain after genomic testing was completed.

There have been no other positive cases from the same flight.

NT health authorities said all passengers and aircrew from the flight had been tested twice and would be re-tested on Saturday as an extra precaution.

The woman remains in isolation at the Howard Springs quarantine facility.

The detection of the UK strain in the NT follows confirmation a woman who flew to Brisbane on a Jetstar flight from Victoria on January 5 has tested positive for UK variant of the virus.
