Merseyside Police has confirmed they are responding to a crash on the road and are advising motorists to avoid the area.
Pictures from the scene show two fire engines, an ambulance and two police vehicles.
Police said one woman has been taken to hospital but her injuries are not believed to be serious.
An eyewitness at the scene said: "We had just come over the traffic lights from Breck Road on to Poulton Road and saw flashing lights of a fire engine. At first we thought it was a fire but there was no smoke and we saw police starting to block off the road to cars.

"The small queue of traffic started making u-turns and as we were waiting we heard the sirens of a police van and ambulance as they arrived."
