Woman in critical condition with reported gunshot wound and number of officers injured inside Capitol building after Trump supporters run riot

A woman is in critical condition after reportedly being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds as Donald Trump supporters continue to storm the grounds.

CNN reports that a woman is in a critical condition and a number of police officers have been injured after Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on the day Congress meets to certify the Electoral College votes from last November's presidential election.

Photo and video showed Congress members reportedly being evacuated from the floor after President Trump earlier told thousands of supporters gathered in Washington DC that "we will never concede" the presidential election.

A video taken by a Twitter user showed a fight between officers trying to keep supporters at bay as chants of 'USA' ring through the corridors.

Another video by NBC News producer Frank Thorp V showed protestors having stormed the Senate floor.

A curfew has been put in place in Washington and Congress members reportedly being evacuated over concerns for safety, with reports of tear gas being used in the building.

Mr Trump had earlier addressed a "Save America" rally on the Ellipse, just south of the White House, on Wednesday following speeches by his sons Eric and Donald Jr.

He urged Vice President Mike Pence to help overturn Joe Biden's victory in the November election when Congress sat to certify the Electoral College votes.

"If Mike Pence does the right thing we win the election," Mr Trump said.

"All Vice President Pence has to do is send it back to the states to re-certify and we become president and you are the happiest people," Mr Trump said, repeating a falsehood he has been promoting leading up to the congressional session.
