A 19-year-old woman is in a critical condition after a car that was pursued by police crashed into a lamp post in south London.

The Metropolitan Police indicated for a car to stop in the area of Streatham Common Northside at around 4.25am on Sunday.

Police said they began to pursue the car when it failed to stop.

A short time later the vehicle crashed into a lamp post in Greyhound Lane.

The London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade attended the scene.

All five of the passengers of the car were taken to hospital for treatment.

Three of the women remain in hospital, two others have been discharged, and one 19-year-old woman is in a critical condition.

Scotland Yard said an investigation has been launched and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The Directorate of Professional Standards has also been informed.

Road closures have been put in place in Greyhound Lane, and the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit continues to enquire into the circumstances of the incident.

Any witnesses who have yet to make contact are asked to call the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574.
