Woman in critical condition after being hit by car - a man has been arrested

A man has been arrested after a woman was hit by a car in Rochdale.

Emergency services were called to A58 Halifax Road in Smallbridge on Wednesday afternoon to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a red Peugeot 308.

A 37-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries .

She is still in a critical condition.

It is understood the incident happened near to Smallbridge Library at around 2.40pm.

The road was closed for several hours and the air ambulance also landed at the scene but was not needed.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed a 31-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the collision.

He has since been released on bail.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Sgt Simeon Holt, of GMP’s Road Policing Unit, said: "A woman remains in a critical condition in hospital following this incident and we have specially trained officers supporting both her and her family at this difficult time.

"This collision happened on a busy stretch of road so I am hoping there will be a number of witnesses that can assist with our enquiries.

"If you witnessed the collision or have any dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation, please get in touch as soon as possible."
