A woman accused of fatally hitting a scooter rider in Melbourne's CBD on the weekend has laid on her prison cell bed during a court appearance.
Ayse Leila Laz, 20, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged over the death of a man in a city street on Saturday.
Police are still trying to contact the rider's next of kin.
Laz is charged with culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop and render assistance, theft of a vehicle, driving while suspended and running a red light.
She is also accused of committing offences while on bail, failing to obey police directions to stop and resisting emergency workers.
Laz appeared in court by videolink from a Broadmeadows police cell. She curled up in a bed in the cell for the duration of Monday's hearing.
Her lawyer Avi Furstenberg requested a mental health assessment.
"The enormity of the charge obviously is perhaps having some bearing on her state of health, and I'd ask she be assessed as soon as possible, particularly given she's going into isolation," he said.
Laz is also charged with reckless conduct putting a second person in danger of death.
She's due to return to court for a committal mention on March 1 next year.
