Woman in A1 Leeds crash fighting for her life after car seen driving the wrong way

A woman is in hospital with serious injuries after a car driving the wrong way down the A1(M) near Leeds yesterday crashed head on into a van.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash, that happened on the A1(M) Northbound around 3pm yesterday and led to drivers being stuck for hours while the accident was cleared.

The woman, in her 90s, was a passenger in the Combo van the car hit - and because of her age her injuries are said to be life threatening.

West Yorkshire Police said a silver Volkswagen Polo, which had been travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway, hit the red Vauxhall Combo van about a mile away from J44 near Aberford.

The drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Police added that enquiries so far suggest the Polo had driven the wrong way along the A64 from North Yorkshire before joining the A1(M) in the wrong direction.

West Yorkshire Police are asking anyone with information or who saw the Polo on the A64 to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting log 861 of December 30.

The crash blocked the Northbound carriageway of the A1(M) from around 3pm yesterday, leaving drivers on that road and the nearby M1 at a standstill for hours after roads closed.

Drivers reported seeing an air ambulance attend the scene, as well as many emergency vehicles passing them in the hard shoulder to get to the scene.

National Highways Yorkshire gradually turned queuing traffic around - and the roads were cleared and reopened just after 9.30pm.
