A woman in her 80s is fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by a double-decker bus on Oxford Street.
Police, paramedics and a helicopter rushed to the scene after a pedestrian was critically injured in a collision with a No7 bus outside Oxford Circus underground station in central London.
A large crowd gathered at the junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street, in the heart of the capital’s shopping district, watching the situation unfold, with traffic closed in both directions.
Some onlookers, sharing footage of the incident on social media on Monday, voiced their sympathy with the elderly victim of the crash, amid concern over the extent of her injuries.
The bus driver stopped and spoke to police officers, and the circumstances of the road accident are not thought to be suspicious.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told The Independent: “Police were called at 3.29pm on Monday, 28 September, to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a bus at the junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street.
“Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and the air ambulance. A woman in her eighties was taken to hospital. Her injuries are potentially life-threatening.
“No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.”
