Woman 'humiliated' as nail salon refused to give her pedicure because of weight

A woman has claimed she was refused service at a nail salon because of her weight.

Ashley Cheffen has been going to POSH Nail Spa II in Columbia, South Carolina since she moved to the area back in 2018 and says she's previously had no problems.

So when she went in for a pedicure on June 18, she didn't expect to have any issues.

She says she spent a little time waiting for her appointment, which was to be expected on a Friday evening, but after being sat down in a spa chair and having the nail technician start working on her feet, she got a shock.

Ashley says she felt 'humiliated' (ABC6)

Speaking to Wach Fox News, Ashley recalled how the nail technician began prepping her toes, then abruptly got up and left.

Shortly after the receptionist came over to her and explained what was going on.

"She said ma'am, unfortunately, he's not going to be able to continue your services," Ashley shares.

"We're not going to be able to finish your pedicure because of the weight limit of care."

Ashley says the receptionist told her they wouldn't be able to complete her service (ABC6)

The nail salon's company policy states that a customer is responsible if a spa chair malfunctions if the customer weighs over 300 pounds.

However, it does not mention anything about a refusal of service because of weight - only if a customer is causing disruption in the salon.

Ashley told the reporter: "I left, I sat in my car and I kind of just had a moment.

"I was embarrassed, I was humiliated and I felt horrible."

Speaking on behalf of POSH Nail Spa's owners, Joseph Nyugen told Wach Fox News that the weight limits are only in place to ensure customer safety and nothing more.

He adds that the salon does not "discriminate" against anyone.

"At POSH we just want to make everybody feel welcome," he said.

"POSH is there to serve everybody and there is absolutely no discrimination against anyone of any size.

"As a manager, we will be going around and making sure that everyone feels comfortable."

POSH Nail Spa's owners also later confirmed that the receptionist who denied Ashley service is not working at the salon at this time.
