A woman has been taken to hospital after she was pulled unconscious from the water at Newcastle Ocean Baths on Friday afternoon.
Police and four ambulance crews rushed to the baths about 3.10pm after the woman "disappeared under the water" while swimming in the lap lane area, according to a bystander.
A police spokesperson said lifeguards, an off-duty doctor and bystanders performed CPR on the woman at the scene before paramedics arrived to render assistance.
The woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
