Woman hits out at shop for selling 'offensive' t-shirts about mental health

A woman has hit out at a shop for displaying t-shirts she believes mock mental health issues in a 'comedy' section.

Lynn Miller was on Princes Street in Edinburgh on Monday when she passed the rails featuring a selection of different t-shirts with printed so-called jokes and comments.

However, Lynn was instantly shocked at the designs and says many of them were making light of and mocking mental health issues.

One t-shirt was branded with the words "cute but psycho", with another stating "my wife is psycHOTic".

The clothes had also been displayed on an outdoor rack marked "comedy t-shirts", however Lynn told Edinburgh Live that she found the remarks anything but funny.

Talking about the t-shirts, she said: "Clearly the conversation about mental health hasn’t moved into the 21st century yet on Princes St.

"There is still significant stigma around mental illness. Using derogatory terms like these and presenting mental illness as something to be laughed at perpetuates that stigma and makes people much less likely to admit to having mental illness or that they’re struggling.

"And ultimately if someone who is suicidal feels unable to talk about that or ask for help, this stigma can cost lives."
