Woman hits out at number of roadworks in and around Wishaw

Two sets of roadworks in and around Wishaw have been causing chaos for drivers getting in and out of the town over the past week.

The temporary traffic lights in Glasgow Road are followed by three way temporary lights at Main Street, near Wishaw Credit Union, have been causing long talebacks for commuters with many asking why the roadworks are being done at the same time.

One angry Wishaw resident said: “I’m baffled as to why the council thought it would be a good idea to have two sets of roadworks so close together.

“I think they must use Wishaw as practice!

“A lot of people will be following the same route in and out of Wishaw, from Craigneuk right up the ring road at Dryburgh Road to cut out the town centre, and inevitably get stuck at both, and usually for more than just the one rotation of lights at peak times.

“You either wait an age to get through the both, or join the rat race through the back roads, it’s a nightmare.”

A council spokesperson said: “The works on Glasgow Road at Victoria Crescent were planned works by a contractor on behalf of BT.

“The temporary signals at the junction of Main Street and Dryburgh Road were put in place as an emergency measure due to a road traffic collision which caused damage to the permanent traffic signal.

“This has now been repaired.”
