Woman hit by bus in Swansea city centre as she crossed while traffic light was still showing green

A Swansea resident has spoken of his shock at witnessing a bus hit a person at a pedestrian crossing in Swansea city centre.

Nathan Healy, 23, was driving along Castle Street on Friday evening when he spotted a group of people start to cross the road at a pedestrian crossing, even though cars were still being shown a green light and it was not safe to cross then.

Whilst he and other motorists managed to stop, a bus travelling up the road past Swansea Castle didn't - and bumped into one of the people crossing. You can read more stories about Swansea here.

Dashcam footage from the incident shows the bus several metres away from the group of pedestrians when they begin to cross the road. The green traffic light is still showing for drivers at this point. There are then shouts of warning heard as the bus approaches the group but it still strikes one of the people who has not quite reached the pavement.

Nathan said: "I'd just been to Kaspa's [dessert restaurant] and I was on my way to Parc Tawe, going shopping.

"I approached the crossing by Pizza Express [Positano Express] and saw a group of people, students, walk out. Unfortunately, on a red light (for pedestrians)."

After hitting the pedestrian, Wales Online understands the bus driver drove a few metres away from the crossing before stopping and getting out of the bus to talk to the group. It's not thought that the woman hit suffered any serious injuries.

Nathan reported the matter to First Cymru and shared his dashcam footage with staff at the bus company.

First Cymru confirmed it was 'reviewing CCTV' from incident.

A spokesperson for First Cymru said: "We can confirm an incident took place in Swansea on Friday night which was immediately reported to us and the police by the driver. We later received the dashcam footage from a member of the public for which we are grateful.

"Our own investigations have commenced along with reviewing onboard CCTV. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

We have approached South Wales Police for comment.
