Woman has necklace snatched from her neck in 'terrifying' armed burglary in Co Down

A gang of three men broke into a property in Co Down on Thursday night before snatching a necklace from a woman's neck, police have said.

Officers are investigating the burglary in the Church Street area of Newry on September 4, shortly after 11:20pm.

The PSNI said the confrontation occurred when a woman was alerted to a noise coming from downstairs in the property.

A spokesperson said: "When she went to investigate she was confronted by a masked man armed with a knife or screwdriver. The man threatened the woman who then took her handbag containing cash.

"Two other men, also armed with knives or screwdrivers, were also found to be in the house.

"After snatching a gold necklace from another woman in the house, the three men subsequently fled, making off in the direction of High Street.

Detective Sergeant Foley said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims who have been left very distressed. I want to appeal to anyone who was in Church Street and saw three men acting suspiciously, or anyone who knows anything about this crime, to contact us on 101, and quote reference 2216 of 03/08/20.”
