Woman has huge 22lb cyst the size of a watermelon removed from ovary

A woman had a huge 22lb cyst the size of a watermelon removed from her ovary.

Manjeet Kaur, 61, complained of breathlessness and stomach pain before scans revealed the enormous mass which needed immediate surgery.

Thankfully the risky two hour surgery at Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) was a success.

Alarming photos show the doctors holding the enormous lump after it was removed on Monday (5).

The hospital’s director principal, Dr Kulbir Kaur, said: “It is indeed a great moment for us in these testing times.

“We’re committed to doing well for the betterment of our people.”

The patient, from Kapurthala in the state of Punjab, northern India, first sought medical help at her local hospital, but was moved to PIMS when she got worse.

As she grew weaker it became clear to doctors they needed to remove the watermelon-sized growth immediately.

Dr Harwinder Kaur Cheema, who led the surgery, said: “The cyst could have turned into cancer had it not been removed at the earliest and we are delighted we could remove it.”

After a successful surgery, Manjeet remained in hospital to recover and is said to be doing well, and set to be discharged next week.
