Woman groped & hit at Nalasopara station

MUMBAI: A 22-year-old woman was groped and hit while on an escalator at the Nalasopara station on Tuesday.

Shaken by mishap the victim was so scared that it took her two days to gather the courage and approach the railway police in order to lodge an official complaint.

The incident occurred around 10.45 pm when the woman was headed home from work.

Just when she got on the escalator at platform number 2 of the Nalasopara station, a stranger groped her from behind and tried to rub up against her.

As soon as she turned, the accused hit her on the face and fled.

Terrified by the assault, the victim approached the Vasai GRP chowky on Thursday, following which an FIR was registered for sexual harassment and assault under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

As per the description given by the woman, the accused was about 5.5 feet tall, in his late twenties, and was wearing a purple coloured full-sleeve shirt.

"We studied the CCTV footage from platform number 2, and also checked the footage at the entry and the exit of the station. We got some leads, and were also able to track down the suspect. Our teams are in the process of taking him into custody and interrogating him,” a senior GRP officer said.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
