Woman goes to hospital in Uttar Pradesh for abortion, gets sterilised

AGRA: The 30-year-old wife of a Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan, who had gone for an abortion procedure, was allegedly sterilised without her consent at a railway hospital in Agra. Her husband, Yogesh Baghel, filed a police complaint on Sunday and the Agra division railway administration constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter.

Baghel, a resident of Mustafa quarter who is posted at the Agra Cantt railway station, said that his wife, Nirmala Baghel, was three months pregnant and was getting regular check-ups at a private hospital. On the basis of an ultrasound, doctors said that the child did not have a heartbeat and advised abortion. He then took his wife to the railway hospital, where doctors made the same observation.

A few hours after the operation, the woman complained of severe pain in the abdomen. "Besides having severe pain, she was unable to move. The hospital staff could not give a suitable response on why this was happening even as her condition continued to worsen. We eventually came to know that a sterilisation procedure took place along with the abortion. The hospital administration admitted the lapse after I called the police." He further alleged that the hospital officials misbehaved with him and tried to cover up the entire matter. "They refused to show me the patient file that was prepared at the time of admission. I have filed a police complaint against four doctors concerned with the operation."

Reacting to the matter, Sadar SHO Dharmendra Dhaiya said, "A complaint has been received by us. It is an alleged case of medical negligence. So far, an FIR has not been registered. We are trying to ascertain more facts of the matter."

Meanwhile, spokesperson for Agra division railways, Prashasti Shrivastava, said, "A three-member committee headed by the senior division health officer, SK Singh, has been constituted to investigate. Further action will be taken on the basis of detailed findings."
