Woman gives birth in back of parents' car in painless delivery that took 'seconds'

A woman gave birth in her parents' car just hours after being told she wasn't ready to have her baby.

Melanie Emery had taken her 23-year-old daughter Shannon to Singleton Hospital on Tuesday morning after she thought her waters had broken.

But after having examinations the mum-of-one was told "no, not yet" by members of staff and the pair made their way home.

Grandmother Mrs Emery, aged 43, said: "We came home back to my house and I ran Shannon a bath and she said that she had pains in the bath and she felt the need to push.

"I rang Singleton Hospital and they said someone would call me back but I panicked so I rang Port Talbot Hospital.

"We got in the car and my husband was driving and I had Shannon's little one-year-old Logan in the back.

"Whilst we were driving in the car she said 'the head is out'. She pulled her trousers down and I felt and I had the baby's head in my hand."

On the way to the hospital from their Cwmavon home Shannon's father Layton was beeping the horn and using the hazard lights to try to raise awareness of the family's situation.

But despite his efforts to make it to the hospital his granddaughter had other ideas and Shannon actually gave birth in the car.

Shannon said: "I went to go to bed but I had three intense contractions so my father rushed me down the stairs and into the car.

"I couldn't even sit down in the car, I had to go on my knees.

"It wasn't even half a mile from leaving the house when I had the baby. It was so quick that it wasn't painful and she was out within seconds."

Her mother Mrs Emery added: "The waters broke and the baby was born in Cwmavon Road.

"We rushed because the baby only gave one cry when she came out and we didn't have any blankets so we had to wrap my husband's work jacket around the baby.

"We pulled up on the zebra crossing at the hospital and there were five midwives waiting on our arrival.

"They had to make sure the baby was breathing and she was still attached to my daughter so they had to cut the umbilical cord on the zebra crossing."

Shannon said that the whole experience was still "a massive shock" to her as well as her family. "I still can't get over it," she added.

"It is still a massive shock and the midwives couldn't believe it either.

"I couldn't get over how fantastic they were. I can't thank them enough for everything they did."

After her dramatic entrance into the world Lola Jayne Sheryle Emery, who weighed six pounds and 14 and a half ounces, and her mum were discharged from Port Talbot Hospital at lunchtime on Wednesday.

"We are all still in a daze about it," Mrs Emery added.

"We want to thank the midwives for their quick response and support outside the hospital. They were amazing.

"I'll remember it for the rest of my life."
