Woman gets to keep £50,000 boat that washed up on shore near her home

A woman is celebrating after getting to keep a boat worth £50,000 which washed up near her home.

Rhoda Munro, a shepherdess from Ulva, saw the 25ft boat covered with debris as she sailed to a nearby isle to gather sheep.

The 43-year-old made a few checks with the coastguard which revealed the ship had been swept overboard in a storm while being transported from a Danish shipyard to a customer in Greenland back in April 2019, reports the Daily Record.

Rhoda was delighted when she was told she could keep the boat because insurers had already paid out for it.

She said apart from a slight split in the boat's side, which she has repaired, it is virtually undamaged.

She said: "Poca, the Danish company that made the boat, have now said they are going to sponsor me by donating a £700 A-frame – the piece of a boat which holds navigation lights."

Rhoda has also spent many hours cleaning away the dirt and grime and it is ready to be fitted with an engine.

She added: “I will have a lunch party and go cruising in it. It can carry three tons, so it will be able to carry ewes too.”

Betina Petersen Marker, whose dad started Poca, a family firm of Danish boat makers in 1967, added: “This was a good find for Rhoda.”
