Firefighters were called after a young woman got her head stuck in a bottle bank.
The woman, believed to be a student, had been enjoying a night out with friends in Southampton when she poked her head into the bin outside the civic centre.
When fire crews arrived she was surrounded by friends who were unable to pull her from the bin.
Crew manager Chris Rashleigh told the Southern Daily Echo: “I think it was student night. I think she had been there for a little while by the time we got there. Her feet were touching the ground. She said it was dark and smelly.”
Firefighters were working out how to cut her free when she managed to wriggle clear. “I was explaining what equipment we had when all of a sudden she was free,” said Rashleigh.
The woman was unhurt but embarrassed. “She was very relieved to come out.”
She said: “‘I will never do that again.’”
