May 12--A Bronzeville woman was sentenced this week to at least 10 years in prison after she pled guilty to second-degree murder in the 2014 stabbing death of her child's father, according to court records.
Tinesha Brooks, 28, pled guilty Monday to killing Maurice Paschal, 26, during an argument. Cook County Judge Timothy Joseph Joyce sentenced her to at least 10 years in prison, but he credited her with having served 718 days in jail since she was charged in the killing almost two years ago.
About 11:30 p.m. on May 22, 2014, police and paramedics were called to the 3900 block of South Michigan Avenue, where Paschal was stabbed in a domestic attack.
Paschal went to Brooks' home that evening because they had been in a dating relationship on and off for years and he sometimes spent the night there, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
When Paschal got there, he found that another man was at the home, and he got into an argument about it was appropriate for a man to be there when Paschal and Brooks' daughter was there. The two went to the back yard to talk, and as the dispute continued, Brooks stabbed Paschal 15 times, prosecutors said.
Brooks did not call 911 after attacking Paschal, and a neighbor found Brooks standing over Paschal, tellking him to get up. The neighbor called 911, and when police arrived, they found blood in the apartment and on Brooks, and evidence that she had tried to clean up the blood, prosecutors said.
Paschal was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Brooks at first denied having stabbing Paschal, but later made a statement implicating herself, prosecutors said.
The medical examiner's office determined that Paschal, of the 4000 block of South Michigan Avenue, died of multiple stab wounds.
