Woman fumes as sister bans her from altering bridesmaid dress to suit medical needs

A woman has been left devastated after her sister refused to let her alter her bridesmaid dress to suit her medical needs - as she claimed it would look "trashy".

The woman explained her sister is due to get married next month and back in January, she picked out the dresses she wants her bridal party to wear, which have "very fitted" necklines.

In March, however, the woman was diagnosed with a medical condition that she'll be receiving treatments for via a port - a device placed under the skin on the right side of the chest.

Because of the tight neckline on the bridesmaid dresses, the woman asked if she could have hers altered so it didn't disturb her port, but her sister refused, claiming it would make her dress look out of place.

In a post on Reddit, the woman fumed: "My sister, Hannah, is getting married in May. She's been planning her dream wedding since before she was engaged and has a very specific image of what she wants.

"We picked out the bridesmaid dresses in January and they're all the same style but with different shades of the same colour. In late March, I was diagnosed with a condition that I'm going to be receiving treatments for via port until mid-June. Due to the port's placement, the neckline of the bridesmaid dress I'm supposed to wear is extremely uncomfortable.

"When we went in for our final fittings, I requested that the neckline be made a little bit looser to accommodate this. Hannah was p***ed off by this request because, in her words, it makes the dress look trashy because all of the other dresses are very fitted and mine would then be a bit bigger on top."

The woman told her sister that if she wanted her to wear the dress it would need to be altered, but her sister refused to budge, claiming she would remember the "out of place" dress every time she thought about her wedding.

Her sister then called her "selfish" for not dealing with "mild discomfort" for the sake of her wedding.

Furious, the woman decided to drop out of being a bridesmaid altogether - which caused even more drama ahead of the big day, with the maid of honour "chewing her out" for pulling out a month before the big day.

She added: "I let her know [I was pulling out] and said that I'll still come to the wedding and wear an approved dress, but that I'm not willing to place perfect pictures over my own comfort.

"This has caused a rift in our relationship and an argument among the wedding party. The maid of honour sent me a message chewing me out for pulling out a month before the wedding and I'm honestly not sure how to feel about the whole situation.

"On the one hand, I feel guilty for not supporting my sister but on the other, I am hurt by her placing her wedding over me."

Commenters on the post urged the woman not to place her own health above her sister's wedding, and said that if her sibling wasn't willing to accommodate her needs, then she was right to drop out of the bridal party.

One person said: "You're not altering the dress to spite her or for looks. You have a medical condition that was unexpected, and this is one little thing you need accommodation for. Honestly, she's the a**hole for putting looks first and your medical condition second."

While another added: "Your sister cares more about pictures than her sister's medical condition. She wants your port to be hidden because she thinks people will ask you about it on her wedding day. She, like many bridezillas, is afraid that one ounce of attention won't be on her all day."
