Firefighters used specialist equipment to extract a woman in her 30s.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed the woman was then taken to hospital.

It’s thought that a van and car collided.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “At approximately 9am on Wednesday, 16 June, three fire engines from Bolton Central and Hindley fire stations, as well as the Technical Response Unit from Leigh Station, attended a road traffic collision on the M61 southbound carriageway.

“The road traffic collision involved a car and a van. One casualty was extricated from one vehicle using specialist equipment and was conveyed to hospital by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters were in attendance for one hour and 10 minutes.”

One lane of the exit slip road was closed as the emergency services carried out their work.

Crews left the scene an hour and 10 minutes later.

As of lunchtime, traffic is moving freely on the stretch of motorway.
