A woman is in hospital with critical injuries after being found lying on a road in Adelaide's northern suburbs, but police say it is unclear how she was hurt.

Her son says she is expected to die today.

Emergency services were called to Sampson Road in Elizabeth Grove about 8pm last night after Karen Johnson, 59, was found with serious head injuries on the street outside her house.

Paramedics took her to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

Senior Constable Matt Brown said police were investigating.

"It's unknown how the injuries occurred, so what we are asking people for is anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area or a disturbance or something like that — anywhere between half an hour to an hour before the woman was found — please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.

Ms Johnson's son, Buzzby Barfoot, said the pair had recently moved back to Adelaide from Toowoomba, in Queensland,

He said he last spoke to his mother at 6pm last night when she asked for medication for a headache.

"Unfortunately, the next time I heard anything was the neighbour knocking on my door saying your mother's on the road," the 26-year-old said.

He said his mother was a "lovely lady" who made friends easily.

"The hospital have told me her injuries are something that can't support life," he said this morning.

"They've made the decision to take her off life support and they've told me she's likely to pass today."
