Woman found guilty of not revealing husband's Isis plans

A mother-of-three has been found guilty of failing to inform authorities that her husband intended to join the so-called Islamic State.

Muslim convert Lorna Moore, born in County Tyrone, knew her husband Sajid Aslam was part of a network leaving to live under Isis, a jury concluded. The 33-year-old’s friend Ayman Shaukat, 27, was also convicted for helping to facilitate Mr Aslam’s travel to Syria.

West Midlands Police were alerted to a group of friends from Walsall making for the war-torn country after the parents of young Muslim convert Jake Petty contacted police.

The 25-year-old left the UK in the summer of 2014 and was killed in fighting before the year was out.

In an earlier hearing two fellow defendants pleaded guilty. Alexander Nash, aged 22, pleaded guilty to preparing for acts of terrorism while Kerry Thomason, 24, had pleaded guilty to aiding her husband Isaiah Siadatan to travel to the war-torn region and engage in acts of terrorism.

West Midlands Police's Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale said the case showed that "whether you are a traveller and going to join" or you are someone who helps in organising, "that's just as criminal and just as dangerous".

He said: "Isis is a really dangerous organisation and the criminal courts will be interested in hearing those cases."

He added: "Another important part of this case is where you have got people who have knowledge of travel and the intent when they get there who have not come forward, and that's committing a crime.

"If they are helping Isis, then that's a danger to the UK."
