Man charged over murder of woman at Maryborough motel

Forensic officers have spent the day at the Maryborough motel.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of a woman in Maryborough on Queensland's Fraser Coast.

Police were called to the Ferry Street motel at around 5:00am (AEST) on Saturday after reports of a disturbance.

When they arrived they found the 58-year-old woman's body.

Acting Detective Inspector Wade Lee said police found the 22-year-old man with the public's help.

"A combination of things led us to speak to this male person, including assistance from the public," he said.

He will appear in the Maryborough Magistrates Court tomorrow.

He said investigators were still working to determine what happened.

"The [woman] and man appear to have been known to each other, and inquiries in regards to what has happened at the scene are continuing," he said.

"The investigation is moving very quickly and I expect that we will be moving toward an outcome very quickly."

Detective Inspector Lee said yesterday it was not yet known how the woman died.

"We have a forensic team at the scene at the moment and they are still trying to determine a cause of death," he said.

"There were a number of witnesses that were at the motel at the time and they are assisting us with our inquiries as witnesses."

A local man working in the area said police asked him to look out for "a stanley knife or a knife with blood on it".
