Woman found dead in Salford stream identified - CCTV footage shows her last movements

A body found in a stream in Salford has been identified as that of missing woman Karen Ellen Smith.

She was discovered in water off Merlin Road in Irlam on Sunday (April, 14).

The body has since been identified as Karen's. The 53-year-old went missing last month.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding Karen's death and have released CCTV footage of her last known movements.

They are appealing for the public's help in a bid to piece together what happened.

A video released by Greater Manchester Police shows Karen in the Premier Stores shop on Liverpool Road in Irlam on Sunday, March 17.

She was also seen at around 9.15am on Monday, April 8, on Silver Street in Irlam.

An appeal released police at the time of Karen's disappearance said she did not have medication with her - or her mobile phone.

Detective Sergeant Karl Dalton, of GMP’s Salford district, said: “This is a tragic incident and there are a dedicated team of officers committed to finding out exactly what happened in the lead up to Karen’s death.

“We have released CCTV in the hope that someone in the local community may have seen Karen and can help us piece together Karen’s last movements.

“Aside from the CCTV which shows her in a local shop on Sunday, March 17, 2019, we know that Karen was in the area on Monday 8 April 2019. Has anyone seen or heard from Karen since then? If you have, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5290, quoting incident number 1198 of April 14. Reports can also be made anonymously via Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
