Woman found dead in Leanyer home in Darwin's northern suburbs, man arrested over suspected homicide

A man has been arrested after the death of a woman at her own home in Darwin’s northern suburbs on Thursday.

Police say the woman's husband arrived home from work at about 5.30pm yesterday afternoon and found his 39-year-old wife dead in the front yard of their Leanyer property.

"His wife appeared to have multiple injuries caused by a sharp-edged type weapon," Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Morrissey told journalists on Friday.

The woman was declared dead at the scene a short time later. Police said they believe the attack occurred at around 2.30pm.

In a statement, NT Police said a 56-year-old man was arrested at 2am this morning at a residence in Rosebery, 15 kilometres away, in the satellite city of Palmerston.

Detective Senior Sergeant Morrissey said the Territory Response Group (TRG) assisted with the arrest and there was "some negotiation to make him come out".

He said the incident was being treated as a homicide and that the woman and man were known to each other.

"They're not related to each other, but we don't know the full circumstances of the relationship."

At the time of arrest, the man was suffering from prior injuries and was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital. Police don't yet know when the injuries occurred.

Police have not yet been able to speak to the 56-year-old, who remains in hospital under police custody, and are waiting for medical clearance to do so.

However, Detective Senior Sergeant Morrissey said he believed the man was in a stable condition.

Simmy, who lives in a property nearby, said police and two ambulances arrived in the early evening and "were there all night".

He said he didn't know the people in the home but that it was "usually a quiet street".

Police called for anyone who saw a silver Nissan Navara duel cab ute with an orange witches hat in the back near the Leanyer area at around 2.30pm to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Anyone who may have CCTV of the area, or who has any other information about the incident, was also urged to come forward.
