Woman found 'covered in blood' in the street with head injuries

A woman was found 'covered in blood' in the street with injuries to her head and face, Merseyside Police have confirmed.

The woman, in her 40s, was found injured by officers in the early hours of Wednesday. It is believed the injuries were sustained on nearby Lord Street.

Officers who found her were following reports of an assault which occurred shortly after midnight.

The woman was then taken to hospital by police for an assessment of her facial and head injuries.

Posting in a community crimewatch group, one witness claimed he heard a woman 'screaming' and reported there being 'blood everywhere'.

The witness said police were in attendance by the time he posted to let residents know about the incident.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that detectives are investigating following reports of an assault in Southport in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 31 March.

"At shortly after midnight, officers attended Post Office Avenue after a woman in her 40s was found injured. She has been taken to hospital for assessment of head and facial injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances but the incident is initially believed to be have occurred on Lord Street before the victim made her way to Post Office Avenue."
