Woman finds 'dead insect' in 'mouldy' KFC popcorn chicken

A woman was horrified after finding a dead insect in her KFC popcorn chicken box.

Lucy Stubbs, 21, from Crewe found the six-legged creature in the fast food takeaway just before she took a bite of her meal.

The young woman had accidentally knocked the takeaway box over when she saw a large black insect falling out, Cheshire Live reports.

Upon examining the meal, she also found one piece of chicken "covered in mould".

KFC and Cheshire East Council's environmental health department have said they are investigating the claim.

The 21-year-old said: "It was disgusting.

"I put the box in the kitchen but accidentally knocked it over and that's when I found the insect, it fell out of the box.

"It made me feel ill thinking about it because we had already eaten some of the food."

The fast food chain, at Grand Junction Retail Park in  Crewe , is known for its buckets of fried chicken, plus wings and sides.

After complaining to the US-owned restaurant chain, Lucy has vowed never to eat there again.

A KFC spokesperson said:  "We have strict hygiene standards in all our restaurants so were surprised to hear about this.

"Since the incident, we've had a full inspection from an independent pest control company and the Environmental Health Office who've both found no issues at our Crewe restaurant.

"That being said, we're sorry for Lucy’s experience and are looking into what could have happened."

Lucy has also issued a complaint to the environmental health department at  Cheshire East Council.

A spokesperson at Cheshire East Council said: "We have received a complaint and are investigating it."

Lucy has since told Cheshire Live she has received a follow-up message from the environmental health department which confirmed it had visited the Crewe KFC premises to carry out a full survey and no issues were found.

It was confirmed the coating on the chicken was a quality issue and if spotted, would not be served to a customer.

The department concluded it would be keeping Lucy's complaint on file just in case they received any further complaints.
