Woman fights off alleged carjacker in Tasmania

A woman has "bravely" fought off a man who allegedly tried to take control of her car, with members of the public also praised for helping catch the suspect.

Police said a 29-year-old man was "attempting to flee from police" on the Midland Highway at Brighton, about 20 kilometres from Hobart, this morning.

"The female driver bravely refused to assist the offender and he fled the scene," police said.

The offender was then chased on foot by an officer with a passing motorist stopping to pick up the officer and following in the direction of the fleeing man, police said.

Police said the man would face charges relating to family violence matters and the vehicle incident.

The female driver was shaken after the incident and comforted by members of the public.

Police said they would also like to speak to one of the good Samaritans — a man who assisted the female driver of the vehicle.

Senior Sergeant Andrew Bennett praised the bravery of those who helped apprehend the alleged offender.

"We're really appreciative of their efforts. They don't know the harm they are putting themselves in," he said.

Police urged anyone with information or who observed the incident contact Bridgewater CIB on 62684100.

Information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
