The 60-year-old woman is in critical condition in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle following the collision on Friday morning.

The North East Ambulance Service transported the woman to hospital by road with a Great North Air Ambulance doctor on board.

The woman's condition is being described as critical.

The driver of the van is helping police with enquiries and did not require any medical treatment.

Northumbria Police is now appealing for witnesses to help them with their investigations.

Sergeant Armstrong, of Northumbria Police Motor Patrols Department, said: “A full investigation into how the collision occurred is now underway and the family of the woman involved have been notified.

“At the time of the collision we know that Chester Road was busy with members of the public, many of which assisted those involved in the collision until the emergency services arrived.

“I would ask anyone who has not already been spoken to police to get in contact with the investigation team.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam footage of the collision is asked to contact police via 101 and use reference number 203 02/08/19 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
