Woman fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a Metro train near Chichester station

A woman is critically ill in hospital after being hit by a Metro train.

Emergency services including police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Chichester Metro station in South Shields at around 9.40pm on Sunday.

Trains were suspended between Bede and South Shields due to the "serious police incident" between 9.45pm and 11.15pm.

A woman who suffered "life-changing injuries" was taken to hospital after being struck by a train close to the station.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 9.40pm yesterday, police received a report of a woman being hit by a train near Chichester Metro station.

"Emergency services attended and woman was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries.

"She currently remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition."
