Woman fighting for life after being hit by delivery truck in North Shields town centre

A pedestrian is fighting for her life after being hit by a delivery truck in North Shields town centre.

The 'serious collision' happened just after 12.30pm on Monday outside the library on Northumberland Square in the town.

A 60-year-old woman was knocked down by a delivery van and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

She suffered injuries to her back and arm and is currently in a critical condition.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision to contact them.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for information following a serious collision in North Shields which has left one woman seriously injured in hospital.

"At about 12.45pm today, police received a report that a delivery truck had been in collision with a 60-year-old pedestrian on Northumberland Square, North Shields.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries where she remains in a critical condition.

"An investigation is ongoing and police are keen for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has dashcam footage, to come forward.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 466 13/05/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A police collision investigation took place on Northumberland Square in the hours following the crash but the road has now been reopened.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 12.36 following a road traffic collision involving a woman and a vehicle in Northumberland Square, North Shields.

"An ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene and the patient was taken to the RVI A&E with back and arm injuries."
