Woman fighting for life after being hit by car while walking on footpath in Sunderland

A woman who was knocked down by a car while walking on a footpath in Sunderland is fighting for her life.

At around 3.40pm on Tuesday, a grey Toyota Yaris hit a 58-year-old pedestrian as she walked through the city.

The collision happened on Springwell Road near to the junction of Sackville Road where the woman had been walking on a public footpath.

Emergency services attended the scene and the pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

She remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition but now police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police ’s motor patrols department, said he was particularly keen to hear from anyone with dashcam footage.

He said: “This is a serious collision that has left the pedestrian with a number of significant injuries.

“Specialist officers are supporting her and her family while we carry out our investigation into the circumstances around the incident.

“We have already conducted a number of inquiries but now we are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to get in touch.

“If you saw what happened, or if you have any dashcam that may have captured what happened, then please contact police.”
