An investigation is under way after a woman was left fighting for her life after falling from a bridge in Wallsend.
Emergency services were called on Thursday to reports a woman was on the wrong side of the railings on a bridge near Boyd Road.
Northumbria Police officers and North East Ambulance Service were called just after 6am.
The woman involved is in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Because police officers were at the scene when the women fell, the incident will be investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 6am this morning police received a report that a woman was on the wrongside of the railings of a bridge near Boyd Road in Wallsend.
"Emergency services attended to negotiate with the woman in a bid to bring her to safety.
"However, the woman fell from the bridge on to the footpath below and has been taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
"The case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as is a matter of course when officers are on the scene when an incident of this nature takes place."
An ambulance services spokesperson confirmed a woman was taken to the RVI.
