Woman fiddled £50,000 benefits to spend it on drugs

A judge told a benefit fiddler to carry out his requests or go to jail.

Judge James Patrick told Amber Claridge her dishonesty was "breathtaking" after she admitted defrauding just shy of £50,000 over three years to feed a drug habit.

When she appeared at Bristol Crown Court he told her to look at the brown door behind her - because that was the route to the cells she would be taking if she didn't toe the line.

Claridge, 33, of Alexandra Park in Fishponds, pleaded guilty to failing to notify a change of circumstances to wrongly claim income support, housing benefit, child credit and universal credit.

Judge James Patrick deferred sentence on her until June 8.

He told her: "You were mired in a drug addiction but this was breathtaking dishonesty.

"You were using the system to fund your dishonesty.

"But you are turning your life around and you are of hitherto good character.

"Have a look at that door behind you. You know where that goes.

"That was the door I thought you were going through.

"You and I will meet again on June 8.

"I will have an updated report and I want it to be glowing."

The judge told Claridge to address her drug addiction, maintain a home and look for work.

Emily Heggadon, prosecuting via video link, said Claridge wrongly claimed £49,125.12 between April 29, 2016 and March 29, 2019.

The court heard Claridge received overpayments of benefits after failing to notify authorities that two children were not living with her.

Craig Tickner, defending, said: "She had moved into new accommodation in the last couple of days.

"That will give her additional structure between now and sentence."

Mr Tickner said it would be up to him to investigate what money his client had been legitimately entitled to claim over the course of her offending.
