Woman 'feels like crying' as neighbour keeps her awake with loud singing at 1am

If you've ever had to deal with annoying neighbours, then you'll know how much of a nightmare it can be - especially if they're the sort of people who like to make noise late at night and keep you awake.

And one woman has now said she's been left on the brink of tears thanks to her noisy neighbour's antics, as she was kept awake until the early hours of the morning with his "extremely loud" singing.

The woman posted on Mumsnet at 1am to vent about her neighbour, as she said he had been singing into a microphone with "loud backing music" for the last four hours.

She phoned her brother to "cry" about the noise and he told her to try phoning the police to make a noise complaint, but as she is the man's only neighbour, she knew she wouldn't be able to remain anonymous - so didn't want to risk it.

In her Mumsnet post, she explained: "My neighbour has been singing for the last four hours. It is now 1 in the morning. He is singing into a microphone with accompanying loud backing music. It is extremely loud. I feel like crying. He has done this before a couple of times. He goes on and on for hours.

"I just rang my brother to cry. He suggested calling the police to make a complaint. But I am their only neighbour. The other house near us is empty. The man that lives in the house lives with his two brothers. They all look very large tough and intimidating. I'm worried if I call the police, they will know it is me. If I bring the police to their door, I think they might retaliate and make things worse for me.

"So I'm stuck. I'm so tired. I feel like crying."

In further posts, the woman claimed the man has pulled similar antics before, and insisted she wasn't comfortable going around to his house to ask him to turn his music down, as she's intimidated by the three men who live in the property.

Eventually, she was pleased to report he stopped at around 2am, five hours after he originally started his music session, and an hour after the woman made her post.

Commenters were sympathetic toward the woman, and some encouraged her to talk to her local council and file an official noise complaint with the police - as even if they don't visit the house, it's a good first step to have the complaint on file.

One person said: "That's awful. So sorry you're being put through this. I've had noise like this in the past from neighbours and it really affected me deeply.

"If it happens often, you ought to think about making a complaint to your local environmental health team. You could call police 101 for advice; they won't necessarily turn up and bang on his door if you think it will make things worse, but they may have advice that might be useful."

While another added: "Phone 101 to at least get it noted, and phone the council in the morning. We had it for six years and know how it affects mental health. The sense of entitlement these clowns have knows no bounds. Hope he packs in soon."

And a third wrote: "Contact your council tomorrow. I had to download an app, and press record as soon as the noise started then it sent the recording automatically, time-stamped, and they could tell the decibels recorded in my house. The neighbour got a warning letter from the council and the noise stopped."
