Woman Fatally Stabs Husband After Argument Driving Home from Funeral

(Shelby County Sheriff's Office)

A Memphis woman has been charged with second-degree murder after deputies discovered her husband had been fatally stabbed at the scene of a single-vehicle crash in Cordova on Saturday night. Sheila Curtis, 56, was arrested the following day and is being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

According to an arrest affidavit, deputies were called to Macon Road and Houston Levee Road at 9:53 p.m. after a Chevrolet Colorado was found wrecked in a ditch. The driver and only occupant, identified as 59-year-old Derrick Curtis, was bleeding heavily. Deputies noted a large pool of blood in the driver’s side floorboard that appeared inconsistent with the relatively minor crash damage.

First responders said Derrick told paramedics that his wife had stabbed him. He was found with three stab wounds to his left leg. Paramedics rushed him to Regional One Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:49 p.m, as per News 5.

Detectives searching the vehicle found several belongings linked to Sheila, including her purse, phone, work identification, and luggage. Investigators located her the next day and brought her in for questioning.

During the interview, Sheila provided what detectives described as a partial statement. She claimed she and her husband had argued in the car while driving home from a funeral in Bolivar and that Derrick dropped her off before the crash happened. She did not provide further details about the reason for the fight. Detectives noted that records show the couple had a history of domestic violence.

Investigators also spoke with a family member who confirmed he picked up Sheila and her mother about two miles south of the crash site near Houston Levee and Walnut Grove Road shortly after the time of the wreck. He told detectives that Sheila’s mother said the couple had “gotten into it,” prompting them to call for a ride.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to Derrick Curtis’ death.
