Woman fat-shamed at husband's funeral as coffin is lowered into ground

A woman has told of how she was fat-shamed at her husband's funeral while his coffin was being lowered into the ground.

The widow - who only wants to be referred to as Toni - was left devastated by the mourner's remark which she tried to brush off.

Days earlier, Toni's husband had been involved in a motorcycle accident.

A car driving behind him came too close and hit his back wheel. Toni's husband was sent flying into the air and landed on his head.

He was rushed to hospital in a serious condition with internal bleeding on his brain.

Three days after the collision, he sadly died.

Toni was consumed with grief at losing the love of her life and the eerie silence in the house made his absence even more prominant.

On the day of his funeral, she put on a black, knee-length dress which featured sheer sleeves.

"There were many people there. Some I knew well, others I didn’t know at all," she told Love What Matters.

"I felt like I was there but somehow floating above myself, watching it all take place. It was like I was an imitation of myself, an imposter. I didn’t feel like me. The grief was too strong."

It was then as her husband's coffin was being lowered , Toni heard a mourner whisper: ‘They’re putting her husband in the ground. You’d think she would’ve lost a few more pounds and worn a cuter dress.’

Toni's sister heard the comment too (stock image) (Getty Images)

Devastated Toni thought she was the only person who had heard the cruel remark, but so had her sister.

Her sister then turned to her and said: ‘Okay. New plan. Bury her instead and then we go eat 20 burgers.’

Toni added: "I was fat shamed at my husband’s funeral. A place I thought would be a safe zone.

"A faint smile was all I could muster, but her comment eased the insult."

Toni and her sister then went to In-N-Out and 'ate away their grief' with burgers and chips.

She added: "To the woman who fat shamed me, cheers. I ate 5 burgers in your name."

Toni also admitted she's since gained 35 pounds (2.5st) since her husband's death and loves "all 247 pounds of me."
