Woman falls overboard into the Gulf of Mexico from Carnival cruise

MIAMI _ A 44-year-old woman went overboard from the Carnival Triumph into the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday night, Carnival Cruise Line confirmed Monday.

The ship, which sails from New Orleans, was on the second day of a five-day cruise when the passenger was "seen going overboard," said Vance Gulliksen, spokesman for Doral-based Carnival.

"All appropriate authorities have been notified and Carnival's CARE Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family," Gulliksen said in a statement.

The U.S. Coast Guard is leading search and rescue operations. The Triumph is en route to Cozumel where it will arrive Monday evening.

This is the second incident of a passenger falling over a railing on a Carnival cruise this week.

On Friday, a woman died after falling from the 14th floor balcony in her cabin on the Carnival Elation to the 11th deck. The cruise line said that balconies on its ships meet Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act standards.
