Woman dumped piles of rubbish outside her home - now she's been fined almost £1,000

A young woman who spent months dodging punishment has been fined almost £1,000 after being caught dumping rubbish outside her own home.

Farhio Yusuf spent 20 minutes throwing black bags full of waste and other trash onto a grassed area at the back of her house on Swinburn Street, Moston - completely unaware she was being watched.

But Manchester City Council had installed CCTV at the spot following complaints from residents about waste constantly being fly-tipped there.

In March last year, cameras picked up 27-year-old Yusuf, along with a man, throwing bags of rubbish into the grass.

The dumped bags were cleared by the council and searched by Biffa officers who found further evidence linking Yusuf to the trash and an investigation was launched by the Environmental Crimes Team.

Yusuf was invited to attend an interview under caution on two separate occasions, but failed to attend either appointment.

Several months later, she moved from Swinburn Street to Adamson Walk in Moss Side - and the council sent another letter.

This too was ignored, so in September last year an officer knocked on her door to personally hand-deliver an invitation to attend interview.

But again she took no notice, and the case was sent to the council’s legal service for prosecution.

Yusuf failed to attend two court hearings at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court , and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

She was taken into custody and on February 14 pleaded guilty to an offence of fly-tipping.

Yusuf was fined £400 and made to pay costs of £200, plus compensation towards the cost of clearing the waste of £380 - a total of £980.
Executive member for Neighbourhoods, coun Rabnawaz Akbar, said: "We installed one of our CCTV cameras at this location after residents told us about repeated fly-tipping offences blighting their neighbourhood.

"I’m pleased that we've been able to prosecute Yusuf as a result of this action and want to thank our Environmental Crimes team, for their persistence in ensuring that justice was served.

"Ignoring our communications only made matters worse for Yusuf.

"The message is clear - if people fly-tip in Manchester, we will do everything in our power to track them down and punish them for the crime."
